CASA FELIZ

Our rental house Casa Feliz is not part of the bed and breakfast but is part of the same compound that includes the bed and breakfast and our own home.

Before reading this text, you may wish to take the above visual tour of Casa Feliz.

Casa Feliz is a spectacular example of nineteenth century Spanish colonial architecture which is based on the domestic  architecture of classical Rome.  Think Pompei .  Casa Feliz has been tastefully modernized and is in perfect shape.  If offers the following:

A)
Master bedroom suite with en suite bathroom with shower and bidet. This is the Buddha Room. The bed is king size and  extremely comfortable.  It has air conditioning and ceiling fan, both individually controlled.  The bedroom has pasta tile floors.  The walls of both the shower area and the toilet/bidet area are lined in honey colored travertine.  The vanity top is granite.

B)      Large second bedroom that we call the Africa room because of the strong design of its pasta tile floor.  It has an en suite bathroom with walk in shower, slate lined walls, Yucatan marble-topped vanity and slate flooring.  There is a very comfortable queen size bed.  The closet is very big and has very tall colonial doors.  There is an art glass opalescent window that allows natural light plus skylights in the bedroom and the bathroom.  The air conditioning and ceiling fan are individually controlled.

C)      The large living room has the original beamed and very high ceilings.  The pasta tile floors are very beautiful.  There is a very large window with very ornate and old wrought iron.

D)     Beautiful vestibule, very long gallery and a rear vestibule, all with beautiful pasta tile floors.

E)      Fantastic eat-in kitchen with granite counter tops, stainless steel refrigerator, gas stove and oven and dishwasher.  The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes and silverware, ordinary countertop appliances, microwave oven, pots and pans, and utensils.  There is abundant storage.  The pasta tile floor matches the pasta tile of the covered veranda onto which the kitchen opens through French doors.

F)
Large and private covered veranda with cheerful pasta tile floor.  Through three large arches it looks out to your private garden, lushly landscaped to ensure privacy and to provide non-stop blooming flowers.  The garden is fenced by an elaborate wrought iron fence, gate and a monumentally sized wrought iron grill covered with sweet smelling jasmine.  Beyond your gate are the big yard and the big pool.  There is a very large mural on the wall depicting St. Francis preaching to the animals of the Yucatan.

The bedrooms, bathrooms and  kitchen  are air conditioned and have ceiling fans.  The great height of the colonial living room, its eastern exposure, tall window shutters and the thickness of the house’s stone walls make it unnecessary to air condition that room.  The house is oriented from east to west which is the direction of the breeze here in Merida and so air conditioning does not have to be used too often except for sleeping.  The covered rear veranda has ceiling fans.

Casa Feliz, our guest house, has its own address and front door.  You get your own key and complete privacy inside your home.

The guest house is beautifully furnished and decorated.  The lady who does laundry is 50 feet from your front door and gets it done excellently within a few hours and very cheaply.  There is ample hot water and good water pressure.  Wifi is available on the veranda.

Guests at Casa Feliz share the big house's large pool and amazing yard and gardens.  Casa Feliz has been designed and landscaped in such a fashion that its privacy is ensured.  The environment is peaceful and cheerful.

Arrangements, at an additional charge, can be made for daily housekeeping.  We have found that most of our guests prefer uninterrupted privacy to daily housekeeping.  Included in the base weekly rental is housekeeping every four nights, as well as trash pickup from the rear  veranda and maintenance of your garden.

No meals are provided to the guest house.  If sinful sloth should overcome you here in the tropics and you find yourself too lazy to make your own breakfast in your own splendid kitchen, there is the great cocina economica Tio Will’s right across the street to make you a great and inexpensive breakfast.

Casa Feliz has been described as the brightest jewel in the Santiago neighborhood.  We are very proud of it.

The guest house rents by the week.  The weekly rental is $1200 USD per week.  In any rental period during which Christmas, New Year’s Day, Epiphany/Tres Reyes or the five days before Ash Wednesday may fall, the weekly rental is $1400 USD.  Why demand increases at Christmas and New Year’s is obvious; Epiphany/Three Kings is the parade and festival celebrating the anniversary of the foundation of the city of Merida in 1542 and the five days before Ash Wednesday are one of the greatest and most beautiful Carnival/Mardi Gras celebrations in the world, just five blocks away.  The daily Carnival parades last four hours and are spectacular but not scandalous.  The public fireworks for all the holidays here are fantastic.

You may choose to reserve longer than a week and the rent for each additional day will be prorated based on the weekly rent.  If you stay longer than fourteen nights, there is a 25% discount for the fifteenth night and thereafter.

A deposit of 50% is due at the time of your reservation and it is 80% refundable if you cancel your reservation more than 45 days prior to the start of your reserved stay.  During your stay at the rental house, you will need to settle your weekly balance at the beginning of each rental week.  There is a 8% surcharge if you pay your weekly bill other than in cash.  This extra charge reflects our actual expense if you use a credit card to pay your bill here in Merida.  You can avoid this surcharge just by going to the ATM around the corner and getting cash.

If this rental house does not rent for the whole week, we make the bedrooms available for nightly rental.  You will see these rooms listed on this webpage as the Buddha room and the Africa room.
