We have a surprisingly large number of cheerful professors and the like who stay with us. We have found that they enjoy a more personalized travel itinerary than may be available ordinarily with local tour operators. By first hand experience and experimentation, our good friend Roberto Lara and we have created a specialized set of day trips that may appeal to you. They represent good value.
Roberto Lara is, by common consensus, one of nature’s true gentlemen, as kind and thoughtful as he is competent and reliable. He speaks excellent Spanish, Mayan and English. He was born in the small Mayan town of Muna near Uxmal and has lived in Merida for the past 50 years or so. He drove taxis in Miami and did tailor work in Montreal. He worked for a number of years as the administrative assistant to the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Merida and hence, knows everyone and everything. A few years ago, he and his wife Margarita decided to go into the taxi and tour business. He has a new, air-conditioned seven-passenger taxi van in perfect condition, properly licensed and insured.
By clicking on the tabs on the home page under Day Trips, you can see what Roberto has to offer you. All of these day trips have been experienced by us and they are a lot of fun and very interesting. If you want to get off the beaten track worn smooth by conventional tourism and really get to know the Yucatan and the Mayan people, this is the way to do it.
This is Roberto’s business, not ours. He has his own insurance. At the risk of being formal, please understand that Casa Santiago is not his employer or principal. Roberto’s prices do not include site admission fees or your lunch. You may feel free to tip Roberto if you think it deserved. He has a very pleasant family.
